The Heart of a Family Business: The Story Behind Principal Teachers and PT Hub
In the world of education, it’s not every day you come across a family-run business that has grown from a small, home-based idea to a thriving supply teaching agency and alternative education provision. But that’s exactly the story of Principal Teachers and PT Hub.
The roots of this inspiring business stretch all the way back to May 2000, when Becca Morgan, a dedicated teacher and mother-to-be, was pregnant with her third child. At the time, she was navigating the hectic yet wonderful world of motherhood, working as a teacher while also seeking a way to balance her professional ambitions with family life. Becca saw an opportunity in North Yorkshire for a comprehensive and professional supply teaching service, that would provide schools with Quality Assurance and a high calibre of teacher.
With determination and a £1000 loan from the Prince’s Trust, Becca took the leap and established Principal Teachers—from the comfort of a small bedroom in her family home. She was determined to provide a reliable, high-quality supply teaching service alongside raising her children.
Her vision was simple but powerful: to create a teaching agency that provided an un-rivalled service for both teachers and schools. She wanted to offer teaching staff the support and respect they deserved, while ensuring that schools had access to dedicated, experienced professionals. Over the years, Becca’s unwavering commitment, hard work, and integrity helped Principal Teachers grow beyond what anyone could have imagined.
From the humble beginnings of a box room, the agency grew steadily, with Becca’s children growing alongside the business. It was a natural progression that the next generation of females—Emily, Mary, and Kate—became an integral part of the organisation as they matured into adulthood. Today, these three young women (who are each now also mothers) play a key role in the running of Principal Teachers, each contributing their own expertise and passion for education.
In addition to their work with the supply teaching agency, Becca and her daughters also run PT Hub, a Specialist alternative education setting that offers young people a supportive space to learn and grow outside of traditional school environments. PT Hub supports Neurodiverse young people and those with SEMH difficulties, offering a nurturing and therapeutic approach and a safe space where pupils can thrive and reach their full potential. With Becca’s leadership, Emily’s education experience, Mary’s social work background and Kate’s skills as a Thrive Practitioner, PT Hub has become a place where children are not only supported academically but also given the tools they need to thrive emotionally and socially. The setting holds the ADHD friendly school award, Thrive Ambassador school status and provides a ‘home from home’ and nurturing family atmosphere for all who attend.
These qualities have often been recognised and celebrated by parents, teachers and students alike. Mrs L, SENCO from a North Yorkshire school explains –
‘thank goodness we discovered the Hub – a place where staff really understand the challenges that some youngsters face, where staff go above and beyond to keep youngsters in education but most of all where staff truly value and care for youngsters as individuals. Being a ‘hubster’ has given our young person a sense of belonging, a place to be himself, to thrive and flourish so that he is now ready to move on to the next chapter of his life with confidence. As a SENCO, I have valued the partnership, support and joined up working, safe in the knowledge that our young person is in a nurturing environment and being supported by a team who want only the best for them. Thank you to you all. North Yorkshire are so lucky to have you there to provide such a welcoming, inclusive and nurturing environment for those young people who need it.’
Emily, the eldest of Becca’s three children, is a key figure in the family business. She holds a dual role heading up the Compliance team and Managing PT Hub. Emily’s background in education and her training as a Thrive Practitioner has made her a powerful advocate for students’ emotional well-being and growth. She is PT Hub’s SENCO (Special Educational Needs Coordinator) and is deeply committed to ensuring that every child receives the support they need, both academically and emotionally. Her presence within the team brings a deep understanding of the unique challenges faced by those children who are struggling to manage in the mainstream classroom.
Mary, Becca’s second daughter, also plays a vital role in the success of the business. As a Thrive Practitioner and a Social Worker, she brings a valuable perspective that marries social care with education. Mary’s background in social work means she can help provide tailored, practical support to the children who attend PT Hub. Especially those who may be dealing with SEMH issues and are at risk of permanent exclusion. Mary’s work is foundational to the inclusive, compassionate nature of PT Hub, ensuring that the well-being of their vulnerable children is nurtured in a holistic way.
Kate, the youngest of Becca’s children, a Thrive Practitioner and trainee accountant, brings a different skill-set that is integral to the success of the family business. With her financial expertise, Kate ensures that the agency runs smoothly from a financial perspective, while also contributing to the organisation’s strategic growth. Her unique position within the family business gives her the opportunity to marry her passion for working with young people, ensuring the day to day operations in PT Hub run smoothly, while she works towards becoming a fully qualified accountant.
From a small bedroom to a successful family business, the story of Principal Teachers and PT Hub is one of resilience and passion, built on a deep commitment to both education and family values. The success of the business is a true testament to Becca’s vision and tenacity, and her children’s involvement shows how a family can work together with love, determination and a shared sense of purpose.
But they could not have achieved these successes on their own. The journey from box room to flourishing educational service has been a collaborative one, with the help of some key pivotal members of the extended ‘PT family’.
Becca had this to say to the PT and Hub teams:
“Thank you to for your unwavering dedication, hard work, and commitment to going above and beyond every day. Your passion, expertise, and relentless support make all the difference, and I am truly grateful for each and every one of you. Together, we continue to make PT synonymous with Quality service—thank you for being such a vital part of our success.”
She had this to add as a closing note:
‘2025 will see some exciting developments for PT. Based on the successes in our specialist education setting, we are now extending our unique service into schools. We will shortly be unveiling our 8-week well-being programme, which aims to significantly improve attendance, engagement, and mental well-being. Through group-based, creative sessions, we will focus on building resilience, enhancing self-esteem, and will provide students with practical tools to manage school-related stress.’
